Nuno silk chiffon scarf workshop Create a double-sided felt scarf with merino wool and silk chiffon. Laurie will demonstrate many design ideas that include how to join different silk fabrics, create holes and openings for fastening the scarf in place, make felt leaves and vines that trail off the silk chiffon border, flower designs that can become button fasteners, colour layering and incorporating embellishments like silk hankies.
You will learn how to felt by hand with tips and techniques that will make the felting process as easy and fast as possible. 1 day workshop |
Nuno scarf, dye and painting workshop
Explore a new painting medium. Learn how to felt a Nuno Scarf with merino wool on silk chiffon fabric that can be used as a canvas for painting on with wool dyes. I will demonstrate how to create a variety of scarf designs that include learning how to piece silk and create holes. Paint it as if you were creating a watercolour. You will learn how to paint in layers and set them using a microwave. Understand how dyes work on dry and wet backgrounds and how wool and silk absorb the dye differently. Come with an idea or create spontaneously. Laurie has been working with wool dyes for 14 years. You will learn how to felt by hand with tips and techniques that will make the felting process as easy and fast as possible. 2 day workshop |
Collage and Textures In Felt for Shawls, Capes or Ponchos
We will collage and nuno felt different silk fabrics, merino wool and embellishments. You will learn many felting design ideas to incorporate into your shawl/poncho by demonstrations on how to piece and collage fabrics, prefelts, embellishments, use resists and colour and shadow layering. Dive deep within to create a wonderful wrap. Please come prepared with ideas and or pictures to help create your shawl. Bring embellishments i.e. silk hankies,fibre, yarn, prefelts and silk fabric with an open weave, silk chiffon or silk scarves that you would like to use. I will provide the merino wool and silk chiffon for those who want it. If you also provide your merino wool there will be no materials fee. You will learn how to felt by hand with tips and techniques that will make the felting process as easy and fast as possible. 2 day workshop |
Eco-dyeing and botanical printing Workshop
Create a felted circle scarf to explore the imprints leaves make when mordanted onto silk/wool. We will be placing our backyard leaves on top of our felted scarf to see the wonderful results of leaf pigments and combine this eco-printing with the addition of a transfer dye process used in botanical printing to enhance the leaf silhouette. |

24" bubble wrap, small bubbles
pool noodle
stainless steel or plastic bowl
scissors
dish gloves if needed
bonsai sprayer or glass jar with small holes in lid to sprinkle hot soapy water for felting process
olive oil soap bar
2 old towels
old nylons or long strips of stretchy material to tie your felting bundles with
resist plastic (6mil vapour barrier plastic, 4-6 mil acetate/shower curtain, stiff bubble wrap plastic )
merino wool sliver (19micron is the softest the sliver can include silk)
open weave silk fabric ( chiffon, gauze, organza, margilan )
embellishments ( silk/ hankies/sliver/fabric, tercel, wool locks , yarn, prefelts, open weave fabric,etc.)
for eco-botanical printing include: leaves/flowers ( eucalyptus, alder, maple, oak and all others you love),cotton fabric or paper towel length of scarf
